Save the future of the girl child!

Why should a girl as young as ten be given out in marriage simply because the law of the land supports it? This is with regards to the bill sponsored by senator Yerima the former zamfara state governor that will allow a man in his right senses to marry a ten year old girl for example who knows little or nothing about life. What if I must ask is the advantage if any to such a bill? Who does it favour? The disadvantages far outweighs any such advantage? It is an infringement on the fundamental rights of the girl child which should not be encouraged. The health implication is also there to worry about. My take on this bill is that it should not see the light of day or should be fought against vehemently. Even uf such is common in the northern part of the country there should be a law to discourage would be perpertrators. Please let us rise up with one voice to save the future of the girl child!

It is no longer news that the academic staff union of universities ASUU is on strike. The question is does labour issues have to degenerate to the extreme option of strike before relevant authorities respond. I am sure there was a notice before this action was taken. Is there no minister of education? From the last time I checked there are two ministers in charge of the education sector! And they did not deem it fit to call the ASSU leadership for dialogue before now to avert the ongoing strike. What are they there for? Why does the education sector have to suffer neglect under successive governments? This is the same sector that is looked upon for human snd capital development of the nation. Quite an irony! Is it that a state of emergency needs to be declared on the educational sector? Because as it were the sector is bedevilled by so many challenges which are solvable if there is sincerity on the part of government especially. Well, my appeal is to the government especially to quickly address the demands of Assu which I believe are not out of place as they are the ones that practically knows where it hurts. The fact is they asuu can afford to be indifferent and wait for a total collapse of the system but because they mean well for the future of the Nigerian students. The more reason all and sundry have to rally round asuu to put pressure on the Jonathan led government to sit up and address the strike without further delay!

The Super Eagles: Work in Progress

The Fifa confederation cup has come and gone as far as the super eagles participation is concerned. But there are one or two things to take home. The tournament exposed further the new super eagles in a more competitive front going by the opposition from spain and uruguay especially. The Super Eagles may not have been disgraced but I believe could have done better if they have taken their chances. The frontline of the super eagles is defective especially with regards to finishing aside the absence of key players like Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike, the frontline still needs to be fortified so that there will lots of options unlike what bedevilled the team at the confed cup. The Fifa confederation cup has come and gone as the super eagles participation is concerned. But there are one or two things to take home. The tournament exposed further the new super eagles in a more competitive front going by the opposition from spain and uruguay especially. FIGHTING CORRUPTION: The Economic and financial Crime Commission i.e the EFCC is the most pronounced body set up by the previous Obasanjo administration to fight one great enemy of this nation which is corruption. The purpose is clear but the question is are they living up to it? Why is it that corruption still stares us in the face with the intent to tear the very fabric of this nation apart. What is the challenge of the EFCC? Is it politcization? Is it now a tool to get at perceived offenders of the powers that be? See, I have respect for the people in EFCC because I believe they are fighting as noble cause. This can be rubbished when there is undue interferance in their operations. Maybe they should be given free hand to carry out their assignment with little or no concern for sacred cows. We want to see a more vibrant EFCC. I hope they will see this piece and pay attention to the issues raised.

PRESIDENT OBAMA AND NIGERIA; My attention has been drawn to the report that President Obama snubs Nigeria again in his African tour. It sure raises alot of questions as to why he seem to have a phobia for Nigeria. One critical angle I believe that should not be overlooked is security concerns which at the moment poses a great challenge to security agencies in the country. What I will be strongly opposed to is the politicization of the failed visits.One needs to state categorically that our survival as a nation does not depend on an Obama visit and should subsequently be downplayed. Well, one good thing about is that hundreds of millions that could be wasted by our corrupt officials under the guise of hosting the US president is saved!

The war in Syria has claimed thousands of innocent lives and even though am not syrian am really concerned and disturbed ok fine am not forgetting that we have the terrorist group boko haram to contend with in Nigeria trust me their days are numbered! Ok back to the subject matter. President Assad is heartless no doubt, how a president can war against the same people he professes to serve is baffling to say the least and he is not alone in his quest of anhillation and that is where the role of Russia as a member of the un security council is worrisome! Russia consistently supply modern weapons to syria to continue the mass killing of civilians in the name of trade? Trading without a human face!;( Russia will pay dearly for their insensitivity one way or the other. My prayer and desire for syria is that Assad will be dislodged one way or the other. He does not belong to the future in Syria. He will definetly answer to war crimes in no distant time. Some that followed his steps are alive to tell the story!

I have taken time in reacting to the federal government plan to scrap these exam from the nations educational calender this is with a view to sample opinions as to the credibility of such an exercise. While a section of the academia is routing for it others seem quite opposed to the idea. One of the that will help in taking a position is the purpose of establishing such bodies as against the government reason. I believe for setting Neco was to attend to the growing of candidates sitting for WAEC and SSCE and to reduce the burden on Waec. The question is has this purpose been defeated or achieved? Jamb was meant for admission into nigerian universities? Has it outlived its usefulness? The government position is centered of reducing its size. The question is will it make such a difference if they are scrapped? Well, my advice is that any action taken should not been borne out selfish interest but rather for the general good. Lets be wise as we dont want to deal with issues of policy somersalt.

They have succeeded in unleashing their weapons of mass destruction leaving countless number of deaths on its trail and they dont seem satisfied just yet! The question is has this present government run out of ideas in dealing with the menace posed by boko haram? Especially now that the purported amnesty option seem to have been rejected. They are a terrorist group if we must call a spade what it is. They need a more sophisticated approach to deal not with this conservative approach the nigerian government is using. I think the government should involve the US, and UK or their allies in dealing with this nightmare. At least they have had to deal with more sophisticated terror groups than boko haram. The Nigerian government needs external help as it is obviously helpless in safe guarding the lives of Nigerians. Please we want no more deaths!

The challenges posed by unemployment, a failing power sector, poor infrastructural development, hydra headed corruption and I can go on and on as the list is just endless! My focus here is the federal legislators and their unrepentant greed and selfishness for which Mr President seem helpless or better not prepared to take his chances. I begin to wonder what posterity will remember these legislators for! If I may ask why should the monthly salaries of our legislators be swimming in millions when on the other hand the president is still toying with the idea of removing fuel subsidy, and the legislator's blanket rejection of stipend for unemployed graduates. How selfish can they be? I believe that these legislators and even mr president are primarily there for themselves and any legislation that will not serve their interest will definetly not see the light of day and that is quite sad! Whither Nigeria? And where do we think we are going with this unrepentant level of hypocrisy? I pray for a forceful wind of change that will blow these ones off the political landscape. Meanwhile I leave u to reflect over this for now. I will be back!
